It was one of the best calls I ever made

On Valentine’s Day 2007 a Northeast snow storm stranded air travelers on planes sitting on the tarmac at JFK for 8-9 hours and left thousands more scrambling for days to get home.  You remember, it was a nightmare that played continuously on the national news. 

Now, I was supposed to be in New Jersey that day, supporting my regional sales rep…doing the obligatory face-to-face meeting.  Fortunately for me, I was nowhere near the airport that day

You see, I had been watching the weather forecast and decided on Monday that I wasn’t going to risk flying down on Wednesday, just on the chance the weather would mess up the airports.  It turns out that was one of the best calls I ever made. 

Like most business travelers, I’ve got my share of horror stories, like the time I was flying home and Portland closed their runway for maintenance!  Now picture this, you’ve got an inbound aircraft 10 minutes away, and they close the runway.  50 passengers plus crew flew back to D.C. arriving at midnight to no hotels.  I literally “slept” on the marble floor using my laptop bag as a pillow. Business travelers face countless delays resulting in missed meetings, inconvenient rescheduling, time away from family and friends and activities.  A June 10th Wall Street Journal article said it best with a headline, "Flying Stinks."


A web meeting saved me from the Valentine’s Day nightmare

Back to our Valentine’s Day story.  So I bailed on the trip and joined the meeting remotely from my home office, supported my rep, played my executive sponsor role, and got on with the rest of my productive day. 

I didn’t need to physically be there, but I WAS there.  Total time invested…about one hour, compared to the DAYS in this case I would have been out of the office scrambling to get home and looking for an outlet to plug in my Blackberry!  An extreme case?  Yes, but take even a “normal” business trip.  You can easily kill a day or more for a mere hour or two meeting time.  Not to mention the financial cost.  The return on investment is a no brainer. YES, there will always be a need for some face-to-face, no doubt, but a ton can now be accomplished remotely. 

Think of the time, aggravation and stress I avoided that day.  Web meetings, webcasts, web events, online meetings, lots of names for the same thing…using software to meet online.  Like I said, been around for years.  As both a sales rep and manager I've personally conducted or participated in thousands of web meetings and webinars from one-on-one sessions to large group events.  You can use this tool, but you have to do it well, and that’s what this is all about…revealing to you all the things you need to know and do to make online meetings a success, and the killer mistakes you must avoid at all costs.
